lung cancer stats

The California Cancer Registry and the American Cancer
Society has just published a new brochure "Cancer in California
Facts and Figures 2006. " For those who live in California
with any form of cancer, I urge you to get this information
brochure.

For this report, only focus the statistics of lung
Cancer in California. California is a leader in the tax on snuff
initiatives. Following the trends of cancer in California
determine the measures that the rest of the country must take to
Lower rates of lung cancer in general.

Good News! – Basically

Basically, the news is very good. From the period 1988 —
2002, all incidences of cancer rates in California was
by 12%. The cancer mortality declined by 19%. Thanks to
Proposition 99 – the control of the California initiative to snuff
passed in 1988, snuff cancers associated with decreased dramatically,
more than any other state. Snuff related cancers
include cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth, pancreas,
stomach and bladder. However, it still causes lung cancer
more deaths than any other cancer.

What about new cases?

Out of all Californians alive today, over 15 million finally get some kind of cancer, which is approximately two out of five.
Over the years, cancer strikes about three out of
four families. Only this year, there will be more than 15 new
the cases diagnosed every hour of every day. For men, of all
new cases diagnosed, 13% of them will have lung cancer.
For women, that number is 12%.

The snuff-related cancers

Currently, about 85% of lung cancer is caused by cigarette
smoking. However, many other cancers are caused by
snuff too. Overall, one in three cancer deaths is
due to snuff. The incidence of lung cancer decreased
26% in the period mentioned above. Needless to say, by
smokers who have left smoking, your chances of
getting lung cancer decreases over time. After 15 years, the
risk is only slightly higher among people who have
never smoked.

Secondhand Smoke

I think we all know that secondhand smoke has
determined to cause cancer in humans. But know that
each year in the U.S., about 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of
lung cancer as a direct result Second-hand smoke? The
latest high-profile example is Dana Reeve, wife of
Christopher Reeve. It is believed that she might have contracted
smoke Second-hand as a result of his years as
singer in the music clubs.

Second-hand smoke is particularly harmful to children. The
good news is that in 2004 more than 80% of California
households with children under 5 years to a complete stop
smoking at home.

Trends Alarming Smoking

Given that lung cancer rates in California have fallen
significantly, it would be logical to assume that the habit of smoking
rates have also dropped, right? And indeed they have,
among most adults and adolescents. In 2004, 15% of California,
adults still smoking.

The alarming trend is the increase in smokers aged 18-24.
They are the fastest growing rate of smokers in California and
tobacco companies target them as "smokers
the future. "The smoking rate of 18-24 year olds was 18% in the
2004.

What can you do?

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in California. All
cancers caused by snuff and consumption Excessive alcohol can be
completely prevented. In 2006, 18,000 Californians die
due to the consumption of snuff.

Early diagnosis can save lives through the identification of cancer when it
in the curable stage. The survival rate at five years for most
cancers is very good if detected early. Unfortunately, the
statistics of lung cancer are not as good, especially because it is
difficult to diagnose early.

The California snuff control initiative has helped to put a
dent in the rate of lung cancer. Californians need to stay
informed and aware. More tax on cigarettes is legislation on the
way.
